Twisted Truth

I love wicker. It can be molded into so many beautiful things, from baskets to furniture. Wicker is made mostly from twigs or pieces of wood that are easily twisted and shaped into objects.

The word “Wicked” is also derived from the same root word as “Wicker.” The International Bible Encyclopedia (ISBE) gives this definition of wicked according to the Bible: “The state of being wicked; a mental disregard for justice, righteousness, truth, honor, virtue; evil in thought and life; depravity; sinfulness; criminality.”

Wickedness can sometimes manifest as truth! The Bible says that even the devil can appear as an angel of light (II Corinthians 11:14). Quite simply, wickedness is twisted truth, just as wicker is twisted wood! We see evidence of this wickedness in the Garden when the devil came to Adam and Eve.

The Bible says in Genesis 3:1-7, Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”

The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”

“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so, they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

One of the first things the devil will try to do is twist the truth of God’s word. Genesis 2:16-17 states, “And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”

God did not mention touching it and we also see the devil persuaded Eve to distrust what God had told Adam, somehow perhaps thinking that God was keeping something from her.

Beloved, when God says something in his word, He means that very thing! Don’t allow the enemy to twist the things of God.

“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.”  2 Timothy 2:15.
